Republic Of Malawi

Fast facts

Malawi is a country of some 13 million people in an area of 118,484 km2. (For comparison, the Australian State of Victoria has 5.2 million people in an area of 237,629 km2). Malawi’s official language is English.

Full independence was granted from the British in July 1964. President Bingu wa Mutharika (Democratic Progressive Party) has been leader since 2004. The country is highly prospective for Uranium (and Rare Earths, Tantalum and Niobium) and there is strong government support for uranium projects. As an example of that support and prospectivity, Paladin Energy Limited has gained Government development approvals for the Kayelekera Uranium Project in northern Malawi and construction is in progress with expected commencement of production end 2008.

RSL has interest in two licence areas; Chintheche in the central east of the country and Machinga in the south. High priority radiometric targets were identified from airborne geophysics during a UN-sponsored Development Program across Malawi in the mid 1980’s. The program was undertaken by Canadian geophysical contractors, Paterson, Grant, Watson Limited (PGW). There has been little or no follow-up since then. Anomalies on the RSL leases were re-analysed by PGW in late 2006. There is good access to the RSL leases via sealed roads.

RSL’s Malawi exploration programme commenced in March 2008.
